The Third Light Cone

2024
installation, 3D-printed cone, LED light, motion sensor

This interactive light installation directs a sharp cone toward the center of the forehead. The approaching "dangerous light" triggers an emotional and sensory response, testing whether people can perceive light and receive information beyond vision.

The work occupies an empty, dim space designed for solitary encounter. When a visitor comes within about ten centimeters of the cone at forehead height, the light switches on.

The interaction draws on a biological hypothesis about the pineal gland, often called the "third eye." The gland remains photosensitive even though it cannot directly see. Strong light and a pointed object can prompt a subconscious protective response. Here, minimal form becomes a medium for interaction, emotion, and the search for the sacred within sensation.
