IT IS NOT A SHOW
2020
The project began with several weeks of research into the eye and the desire to look. Rather than represent an eye, the group built a mechanism that draws viewers toward the wish to create reality through vision. A line from the Analects - "Do not look at what is contrary to ritual" - frames looking as a social act governed by changing rules.
IT IS NOT A SHOW uses curtains and mirrors to build a passage where social roles overlap through acts of looking. Moving curtains introduce the contingency of social media. A viewer may peer through a mirror, yet may also become visible to another person without warning. The installation turns the room into both stage and private chamber, materializing the unstable boundary between daily life and entertainment.
