Fourteen Dancing Body Fragments
2020
Fourteen Dancing Body Fragments belongs to the Defamiliarization series. The series considers how people impose logic on familiar things to make the world coherent, revealing distinct patterns of thought and bias. In a set of psychological experiments, participants from different fields connected unrelated everyday objects according to their own logic, reorganizing fragmented information and viewing daily life from outside their usual habits.
This work responds to one participant's sensual, abstract, chaotic, and free associations. Ren translated her perception of that person into the movement of soft fibers. She recorded an improvised dance, selected bodily positions at fixed intervals, and used textile construction to gather the traces on a single rectangular surface. Fourteen fragments cross space and time, disclosing a mental world between presence and the unknowable.
